Kiruna, in Sweden’s far north, is a mining town reborn. LKAB’s iron ore mine, the world’s largest underground, has extracted riches since 1900, but subsidence forces a bold relocation: 3,000 homes, the iconic church, and city hall move 3 km east by 2035.
Above the Arctic Circle, it dazzles with midnight sun, northern lights, and the ICEHOTEL in nearby Jukkasjärvi, rebuilt yearly from Torne River ice.
Sami culture thrives; reindeer herds roam, and indigenous traditions endure. With 18,000 residents, Kiruna blends industry, nature, and resilience in Lapland’s frozen wilds.
