🏖️ Overview:
This mountain temple is located on Mt. Ushitakiyama, a scenic spot for viewing autumn foliage. While currently a Tendai sect temple, prior to the early modern period it was a temple📚 combining Shingon and Tendai learning. It's said to have been founded by En no Gyoja and has long been revered as one of the sacred sites🧘 of the Katsuragi Shugen sect. The pagoda on the temple grounds, built during the Muromachi period, is designated as an Important Cultural Property. It's also home to the 10th sutra mound of the Katsuragi Shugen sect, which was designated a Japan Heritage Site🇯🇵 in 2020.
💞 Why We Recommend It:
This famous autumn foliage spot🍁 in Kishiwada City, Osaka Prefecture, has long been considered on a par with Takao in Kyoto. Although it wasn't autumn foliage season, I visited specifically to see the 10th sutra mound. It truly evokes a sense of history. As the name Ushitakiyama suggests, there are several beautiful waterfalls💦 to explore further into the grounds. Near the temple, there's also the Ushitaki Onsen Shiki Matsuri (Four Seasons Festival), a complex offering day-trip bathing (♨︎) and dining (🍲). We recommend combining autumn foliage and waterfall viewing (👀) with a hot spring (♨️).
