The Nakamura Residence is a well-preserved Ryukyuan traditional house, reportedly built in the mid-18th century. It reflects architectural trends from Japan's Kamakura and Muromachi periods, while incorporating unique techniques in every detail to create a distinctive residential structure. The house combines elements of a farmer's formal warehouse, granary, and livestock shed, resembling a samurai residence.
Situated on a gentle slope facing south, the Nakamura Residence is surrounded by Ryukyuan limestone walls on its east, south, and west sides. Inside, Fukugi trees are planted to serve as windbreaks during typhoons. The limestone masonry is meticulously crafted, with cornerstones and key-shaped stones interlocked to prevent collapse.
Admission fee is ¥500. The residence is less than a 5-minute drive from Nakagusuku Castle Ruins, making it convenient to visit both sites. From Naha Bus Terminal, take bus routes 21, 23, 27, or 90 to Futenma Bus Stop, then take a taxi for approximately 8 minutes to reach the residence.
