Koh Samui's majestic Big Buddha

One of the highlights of my Koh Samui trip was visiting the iconic Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai) — a serene sanctuary that somehow also gave me a dose of aviation thrill!
Perched on a small islet just off the northeast coast of Samui, this giant 12-meter golden Buddha greets you with calm elegance as you ascend the staircase guarded by mythical nagas (serpent-like beings). But what I didn’t expect was the incredible view from the top — not just of the sea and surrounding hills, but also of Koh Samui Airport’s runway! 🛬 Yes, you can actually see planes taking off and landing in the distance while standing right next to the statue. A surreal blend of spirituality and modern movement. It’s one of the few temples I’ve been to where you can hear temple bells and jet engines!
That said — it was HOT. 🥵 The sun was blazing, and the reflective temple tiles made it feel like walking on a griddle. I barely made it down the stairs before I had to get myself a freshly chopped coconut from one of the stalls below. I promise you — that ice-cold coconut water was the most heavenly thing I tasted that day. 🥥😅
If you're planning a visit:
✅ Go in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat.
✅ Dress respectfully (shoulders & knees covered — sarongs are usually available for rent).
✅ Don’t rush — the temple is photogenic from every angle, especially with the blue skies above.
✅ Bring a few coins for donation or for lighting incense.
✅ And... keep your eyes on the sky — you might just catch a plane landing against a tropical backdrop!
