Traditional village of Wae Rebo in Indonesia!

The traditional village of Wae Rebo, in Flores - Indonesia 🇮🇩

Last week, I had the opportunity to take a short trip to Indonesia. I was fortunate to visit #waerebo, a small village at 1,200 metres above sea level. Getting there is a little adventure (an hour’s flight from Bali, a five-hour drive from #labuanbajo airport and around 2.5 hours hiking to the top), but it is worth the effort.

The Manggarai ethnic group still live in those traditional huts, mostly disconnected from the outside world. They have little solar panels that provide energy only for 4 hours per day, rainwater is collected daily, and there is also a small creek nearby. Most of the food consumed in the village comes from the many chickens walking around (and their eggs) and the vegetables cultivated in the gardens around the village.

The village was built over 100 years ago, but it went through a few historical restorations to keep the huts in liveable and safe conditions. The village consists of those seven houses (huts) that have been passed on to their families for 23 generations.

There are also some coffee bean plantations around that are harvested seasonally. Tourists can taste the famous robusta Wae Rebo coffee at breakfast or buy some roasted beans to take home. Staying overnight, you can share a meal with the locals, listen to their traditional music and sleep in one of the huts. It’s not the most comfortable sleep you can have, but it’s one of the most interesting.

I loved everything: the peace and quiet, the genuine and welcoming smiles, the location and the stars are night when everything around you is totally black.
