Exploring a Historic Mosque in Kemeraltı

This is a magnificent, old mosque nestled in the heart of Kemeraltı. Originating from the 16th century, it stood as the largest mosque in Izmir during the Ottoman era. The mosque boasts one large dome along with numerous smaller domes; I believe I counted 16 in total! It's supported by eight substantial pillars. The interior showcases stunning Ottoman Islamic artistry, making it a must-visit. When I arrived to take photos inside, I felt warmly welcomed. I removed my shoes and walked inside. Later, before leaving, I was invited to stay for the prayers. This invitation was deeply touching, but I politely refused, thanked the gentleman, and bid farewell in Turkish, which he appreciated. A healthy dose of respect for other cultures is invaluable when traveling.
