[Malaysia/Kuala Lumpur] The historic Merdeka Square is easily accessible and close to nearby attractions

Merdeka Square is where Malaysia declared independence from Britain in 1957 and where the Malaysian flag was first raised.

During British rule, it was used as a cricket ground, and the original clubhouse still remains in the back.

It's a 7-8 minute walk from Masjid Jamek LRT Station.

The Malaysian flag still flies in the square, and at 100m high, it's the tallest flagpole in the world.

The area around Merdeka Square alone is home to attractions such as the Sultan Abdul Samad Building (formerly the Federal Secretariat Building), City Gallery (formerly the Printing Bureau), Textile Museum (formerly the Federal Railways Headquarters Building), St. Mary's Cathedral, and the Royal Selangor Club.
