The Old Courthouse Kuching: A Timeless Colonial Landmark and Photogenic Gem

#kuchingitinerary

Situated in the heart of Kuching, the Old Courthouse stands as a testament to Sarawak’s rich colonial heritage and architectural elegance. Constructed between 1868 and 1874 under Rajah Charles Brooke, this historic complex served as the administrative center and venue for Council Negeri meetings until 1973.

The building showcases a harmonious blend of architectural influences, featuring belian (ironwood) roofs, Roman-inspired columns, and intricate local carvings. The addition of the colonial-baroque Clock Tower in 1883 and the Charles Brooke Memorial in 1924 further accentuates its historical significance. Today, the courthouse has been transformed into the Sarawak Tourism Complex, housing cultural exhibitions, art performances, and the Ranee Museum. Its picturesque verandahs and lush gardens make it a favorite Instagram spot for visitors, offering a serene backdrop that captures the essence of Kuching’s storied past.
