📝What is it like?
Located in Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, this masterpiece of castle construction technology from the Warring States to Edo period is one of Japan's three most famous castles, also known as Ginkgo Castle. The castle, built from 1601, features large and small castle towers, turrets, stone walls, as well as a vast garden and moat. It was severely damaged in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, but after subsequent restoration work, it was opened to the public in the fall of 2019, and is a spot where you can experience the reconstruction and history. ⸻

• Business hours: 9:00-17:00 (last entry 16:00/climbing the castle tower until 16:30)

• 800 yen for high school students and above, 300 yen for elementary and junior high school students, free for preschoolers 
• Group discounts available (for groups of 30 or more)/common tickets (including Wakuwaku-za) available 
• Access: Approximately 10 minutes walk from the tram stop "Kumamoto Castle/City Hall" and approximately 10 minutes walk from Sakuramachi Bus Terminal 
• Parking: Approximately 600 paid parking spaces available in the area

Don't miss the "special viewing passage" where you can see the collapse and restoration of the stone walls up close, and the display of the interior of the earthquake-reinforced castle tower .
🏰 Highlights of the castle tower renovation
The exhibition uses models and videos to explain the stone wall technology, battle and earthquake damage, and the history of restoration. From the top floor, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Aso area and Kumamoto city .
