Hidden in the heart of Kumphawapi District, about 40 km southeast of Udon Thani city, lies one of Thailand’s most enchanting natural wonders — the Red Lotus Sea, or Talay Bua Daeng. Every cool season, this freshwater lake transforms into a surreal pink paradise, drawing nature lovers, photographers, and romantics alike.

🏞️ History & Natural Significance
Officially known as Nong Han Kumphawapi Lake, this 36 sq km freshwater lake becomes a floral spectacle from December to February, when millions of pink lotus flowers bloom across its surface. The lake is also home to small islands with Buddha statues and shrines, adding a spiritual charm to the scenery.
The Red Lotus Sea has become a symbol of natural beauty in Isaan, and efforts are underway to preserve its delicate ecosystem, which is threatened by tourism and motorboat use

From Udon Thani city, you have several options:
By Car: ~44 minutes, cost: ฿140–฿220

By Taxi: ~44 minutes, cost: ฿330–฿390

By Train + Taxi: Train to Huai Sam Phat + taxi to lake, ~33 minutes total, cost: ฿170–฿1100

By Songthaew: From Bus Terminal No.1, take orange Songthaew 4875 to Kumphawapi (~1 hour, ฿30), then tuk-tuk to the pier
