Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the deepest and most spectacular river canyons in the world, is nestled between the towering peaks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain in China’s Yunnan Province. Carved by the roaring Jinsha River, a tributary of the Yangtze, the gorge is famous for its breathtaking landscapes, dramatic cliffs, and rushing rapids.
The gorge stretches approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) and plunges to depths of over 3,900 meters (12,800 feet) from mountain peak to riverbed. Its name comes from a legend in which a tiger, fleeing a hunter, leaped across the river at its narrowest point.
Nature thrives in this rugged terrain, with diverse ecosystems ranging from alpine forests and meadows to rocky cliffs and waterfalls. The region is home to unique wildlife, including rare birds and mountain goats, while terraced fields and small villages dot the mountainsides, showcasing the traditional lifestyles of the Naxi and Tibetan people.
Hiking through Tiger Leaping Gorge is a bucket-list adventure, offering panoramic views, steep trails, and encounters with local culture. Whether standing on the edge of a towering cliff or listening to the thunderous roar of the river below, visitors are immersed in one of China’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders.
