As night falls and the lights come on, Kunming Old Street comes alive with energy. It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists, who flock to its various specialty food stalls—especially the aromatic wild mushroom hot pot restaurants and the sweet-scented flower cake shops.
Walking into the old street, you’ll see rows of elegant historical buildings glowing under the lights. At a hot pot restaurant named “Fangzhou Pangzi Kitchen,” a huge purple flower-shaped lantern hangs above the entrance, making you feel as if you’ve stepped into a fairy tale. In front of the restaurant, freshly picked wild mushrooms like porcini, termite mushrooms, and matsutake are displayed—each one a unique gift from nature. Another shop, named “Jun Gu,” also showcases a variety of mushroom products and proudly claims to offer the finest quality.
The restaurants are bustling with people. Locals and visitors alike gather around tables, eagerly awaiting a pot of fragrant mushroom broth. The staff skillfully add the mushrooms to the simmering pot, and once boiled, a distinctive earthy aroma fills the air. Enjoying wild mushroom hot pot is not only a treat for the taste buds—it’s also a way to connect with and appreciate nature.
Besides mushroom hot pot, flower cakes are another highlight of the old street. Well-known brands like “Jiahua” and “Pan Xiang Ji” are often crowded with customers buying these traditional Yunnan pastries. Made with fresh rose petals encased in a flaky crust, each bite releases a sweet, floral fragrance that is rich but not cloying—a truly memorable flavor.
The night at Kunming Old Street is a feast of food and a cultural experience. Here, you can taste the most authentic Yunnan flavors and feel the charm of Kunming, the “Spring City.” Whether you’re sitting in a hot pot restaurant savoring a bowl of umami-rich soup or enjoying a freshly baked flower cake on the street, you’ll be immersed in the city’s unique and vibrant atmosphere.
