The treasures you won't find in travel books are often the most surprising! On this trip to Kunming, we ditched the popular attractions and followed the locals' footsteps, ascending Mingfeng Mountain to explore the Golden Hall of the Taihe Palace, the legendary palace of Wu Sangui, the King of Pingxi.
This Golden Hall is no ordinary place. Not only is it the former residence of Wu Sangui, the most powerful prince during the Three Feudatories Rebellion during the Kangxi era, it's also an architectural marvel.
The entire Golden Hall stands 6.7 meters tall and weighs 380 tons. From the walls to the roof and doors, every major structure is cast in gleaming bronze. It's said to be the largest and most complete bronze architectural complex in China.
Climbing the stone steps, it's like stepping into a historical time tunnel. The mountaintop offers fresh air and lush greenery. Even those who prefer not to climb can easily take a golf cart within the park.
Inside the historic residence, you can even see the sword said to have been bestowed upon Wu Sangui by the emperor. While it's more of a decorative piece, it still evokes a sense of the turbulent times.
Besides soaking up the historical atmosphere, this is also a great spot for photos. For a more unique experience, the park also offers rentals of emperor and empress costumes, allowing you to instantly transform into a member of the royal family and create unique memories of your visit.
The entire tour takes approximately three to four hours. If you, like me, are curious about history and culture, this place is definitely worth spending half a day exploring.
