Okayama-Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, a picturesque canal district.
River cruise ships, white-walled streets, willow trees and a nostalgic and quaint atmosphere are the beautiful images that the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter brings to mind.
When I actually visited the place, I was surprised to find that it was so beautiful that it seemed unreal. The streets built with traditional buildings, the retro-modern buildings along the Kurashiki River, the Kurashiki Museum, Shinkei-en, the Ohara Museum of Art, the Archaeological Museum, and the Ivy Square were all fascinating.
The Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter was once the political and commercial center of Kurashiki City. Many warehouses from the 19th century have been preserved and transformed into an art district full of historical atmosphere. The Kurashiki River flows through it. You can experience the fun of a cruise on the Kurashiki River for only ¥700.
Kurashiki has a completely different look after dark. The night lighting designed by Kanko Ishii will light up the streets one by one from the sunset in the evening, instantly filling this nostalgic yet modern Kurashiki district with a dreamy atmosphere.
