Kurashiki was such a peaceful surprise — a small city with a gorgeous historic canal district that reminded me of Kyoto but with way fewer tourists. I wandered through old merchant houses, sipped matcha lattes in quiet cafés, and browsed art galleries. The Ohara Museum of Art even has Monets and Picassos — in a quiet Japanese town!
