Located halfway up Mt. Takao
It is a temple of the Shingon sect.
Inside, you will find the Daishido Hall that Kukai renovated
which is now designated as an important cultural property.
The hall has a wooden sculpture of Kobo Daishi
(which is also an important cultural property)
and is open to visitors every year in early November.
The main statue of Yakushi Nyorai (Buddha of Healing)
is designated as a national treasure
and was made using the "shiraki" technique
using only vermilion on the lips
and ink on the eyebrows and eyes.
In addition,
visitors can enjoy the tradition of "kawarakenage"
in which unglazed pottery called
"kawarake" is thrown into the valley to purify it.
