Kurama Temple, nestled in the mountains of Sakyo Ward in Kyoto, is a special place filled with natural beauty and a spiritual atmosphere. Founded in 770, its principal deity is "Sonten," symbolizing cosmic energy. The temple is also known as the training ground of Minamoto no Yoshitsune (Ushiwakamaru) during his childhood, and the grounds feature several sites connected to him. The approach to the temple, surrounded by cedar and cypress trees, and the "Tree Root Path" with exposed roots create a mystical ambiance that feels like stepping into another world.
★ Time Required
The charm of Kurama Temple extends beyond the main hall to the "Oku-no-in Maoden" located further in. The round-trip hike, including mountain trails, takes about two hours. Walking in the serene environment while taking deep breaths offers a refreshing experience for the soul.
★ Important Notes
The trail includes uneven paths, so wearing comfortable shoes like sneakers or trekking shoes is recommended. Additionally, the weather can be chilly, so dressing in layers is advisable.
★ Recommended Dining Spot
After your hike, treat yourself at "Nagomiya Kokorotengu," located near Kurama Station. Their soft and flavorful rice balls are popular, featuring toppings like chirimen sansho, plum, and grilled rice balls. These simple yet comforting flavors are perfect for satisfying your hunger after a mountain walk.
★ Access
From Eizan Electric Railway's "Kurama Station," it's about a 5-minute walk to the Niomon Gate. From Kyoto Station, the journey, including transfers, takes approximately 90 minutes.
Escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and embark on a small journey to refresh your mind and body.
