Kozan-ji Temple in Takao: The Birthplace of Tea and Japan's First Manga

If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Kyoto and find a place full of history and beautiful nature, we recommend heading a little further afield to the Takao area to visit Kozan-ji Temple, a World Heritage Site hidden amidst the forest. This is not only a peaceful temple, but also two important sites of Japanese culture.

First, it's Japan's first tea plantation! It's believed that the temple's founder, Myoe Shonin, planted the tea seeds he received from Eisai here, making Kozan-ji the starting point for the tea culture that spread throughout the country. Standing in the place where authentic Japanese tea originated feels very special and sacred.

Second, and a real highlight, this is home to a national treasure, the Choju-jinbutsu-giga, a picture scroll featuring line drawings of animals engaging in playful human-like activities. This scroll has been recognized as a "Japan's first manga or anime"! Although the original is on display at a museum, visiting the place of origin is a great way for anime fans like us to enjoy ourselves.

Walking around Kozanji Temple, surrounded by tall cedar trees, gives a sense of peace and recharges your energy. It's a short trip from Kyoto that is worth it for those interested in the roots of Japanese culture.
