✓ Shisendo (Jozanji Temple)
A renowned location for autumn leaves, comparable to the famous Eikando. Situated among the temple cluster in Ichijoji, Shisendo is well-known yet quieter and more serene compared to the temples in the Higashiyama area. Its poetic scenery is already stunning during the lush greenery of summer, making it easy to imagine how much more enchanting it becomes during the autumn foliage season.
Shisendo was built by Ishikawa Jozan, a samurai, scholar of Chinese classics, and landscape designer, as a secluded retreat. The garden's layout features a variety of gates, undulating terrain, and carefully arranged plants, creating a dynamic and layered visual experience. The "Room of Poets" is adorned with portraits of ancient Chinese poets, which is how Shisendo earned its name.
