Kyoto's Iconic Spot! Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Kiyomizu-dera Temple, which inspired the Japanese proverb "to jump off the stage at Kiyomizu," is one of the most famous landmarks in Kyoto, a city renowned for its many historic temples.✨

Upon researching, I found that the official name of Kiyomizu-dera is "Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera." It is the head temple of the Kita Hosso sect, located on the slopes of Mount Otowa, one of the peaks of the Higashiyama mountain range. The temple's origins trace back to a monk named Kenshin, who, after rigorous training in Nara, received a divine revelation in a dream instructing him to "head north in search of pure springs." Following this guidance, he discovered a waterfall with pristine flowing water on Mount Otowa.

Not only is Kiyomizu-dera designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, but it is also registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. Despite its fame, it remains a must-visit destination no matter how many times you've been there.⛩️
