One of Kyoto's must-see fall foliage spots: Tofuku-ji Temple. With its Zen gardens and vibrant autumn colors, experience the most quintessential Kyoto experience.
If you're visiting Kyoto, you'll regret missing Tofuku-ji Temple! I chose this renowned Zen temple for this trip. Whether it's the vibrant greenery of spring and summer, the vibrant colors of autumn, or the tranquility of winter, you can experience the charm and profound Zen spirit of the ancient capital. Its most famous scenic spot, Tsutenkaku Bridge, overlooking the Autumn Valley, is breathtakingly beautiful during autumn foliage season, earning it the title of one of Kyoto's top fall foliage viewing spots. Even during peak tourist season, when crowds are heaving, the tranquility and grandeur can only be experienced in person.
🌳Recommended Tofuku-ji Temple Attractions
1. Tsutenkaku Bridge
If you want to capture dreamy autumn foliage photos, arrive early to grab a spot! Tsutenkaku Bridge overlooks the lush autumn valley of Autumn Valley, offering vibrant greenery in spring and summer and vibrant layers of crimson leaves in autumn. No matter how you look at it, it feels like stepping into a Hayao Miyazaki animation world. During fall foliage season, the garden opens at 8:30 AM, so arrive early to avoid the crowds.
2. Hojo Garden (Karesansui Garden)
Tofuku-ji Temple's karesansui garden exudes a Zen atmosphere. Its stone and white sand echo the natural scenery, and its design features distinct styles from east to west and north to south. Take your time to soak in the tranquility of the Zen temple and let your mind "reset" along with the garden.
3. Main Hall and Small and Large Courtyards
Tofuku-ji Temple's main hall is quaint, surrounded by several tranquil courtyards, each offering a glimpse into the tranquil beauty of the temple. Strolling through the grounds, the air is filled with the subtle fragrance of the ancient temple.

📌My Tips for Fall Foliage Viewing
1. Visit early in the morning during fall foliage season to avoid crowds!
2. Each corner of the Hojo Gardens features a Zen-inspired design, perfect for a leisurely walk around.
3. If you're just looking for the view, the entrance fee is generally 900 yen (Tsutenkaku Bridge + Hojo Gardens combo ticket). There are also many small shops selling Japanese snacks outside the temple, perfect for a break after enjoying the fall foliage.
🚗 Transportation Tips
From Kyoto Station, take the JR Nara Line to Tofukuji Station, a 10-minute walk away. Very convenient, no transfers required!
🍡 Nearby Food Recommendations
- There are many Japanese confectionery shops around Tofukuji Temple. We recommend enjoying traditional sweets at Amomi-no-Kama-Tora (a 5-minute walk) just outside the temple.
- For lunch, nearby Tofukuji Soba specializes in handmade soba noodles. It's warm and perfect for a break after viewing the fall foliage.
✨ Tips for Packing Before Your Kyoto Fall Foliage Viewing Trip
- Fall foliage viewing is incredibly crowded, so wear comfortable shoes and a jacket (the temperature swings dramatically from morning to evening).
- Leave plenty of space on your camera memory card; you won't be able to stop taking photos of Tofukuji Temple's beauty.
- There are no large lockers within the temple, so it's recommended to leave your luggage at Kyoto Station.
No matter when you visit, Tofuku-ji Temple offers unforgettable beauty and a moment of spiritual respite. A Song Dynasty-style Zen temple paired with fiery red maple leaves = a truly Kyoto-inspired memory. A must-see if you have the chance!
