Zhongshan Bridge: The Iron Sentinel of the Yellow River

Nestled in the heart of Lanzhou, Gansu Province, Zhongshan Bridge—often called the “Iron Bridge”—is more than just a crossing over the Yellow River; it’s a living monument to China’s modern engineering history and cultural pride.

Built in 1907 during the late Qing Dynasty with the help of German engineers, Zhongshan Bridge was the first permanent bridge to span the mighty Yellow River. Before its construction, locals relied on floating bridges made of boats and chains, which were often unstable and dangerous. The arrival of this iron marvel, with its five steel arches and six sturdy piers, marked a turning point in Lanzhou’s development and connectivity.

Originally named the “Lanzhou Iron Bridge,” it was renamed in 1942 to honor Dr. Sun Yat-sen, whose Chinese name was Sun Zhongshan. Today, the bridge stands as a proud symbol of resilience and progress, stretching 234 meters long and 7.5 meters wide.

Walking across Zhongshan Bridge is like stepping through time. On one side lies the tranquil Waterwheel Park, and on the other, the iconic Yellow River Mother Sculpture. Beneath the bridge, you can spot traditional sheepskin rafts drifting along the river—a nod to Lanzhou’s ancient river culture.

Though no longer used for heavy traffic, Zhongshan Bridge remains a beloved pedestrian path and a must-visit landmark for anyone exploring Lanzhou.
