[Trip Moment Delivery.🗞️]
On this trip, I visited Lisbon's skywalk, the Santa Justa Elevator! 🇵🇹✨🏙️
🛄ㅣLisbon's Skywalk
While walking through the Baixa district, Lisbon's downtown area, you'll notice a sleek iron tower rising into the sky between the narrow alleys. That's the Santa Justa Elevator (Elevador de Santa Justa)—a 19th-century vertical elevator connecting Lisbon's Old Town to the upper levels. Now, it's a beloved landmark offering panoramic views of the city.
🏗️ A work of iron art built in 1902
This elevator, completed in 1902, was designed by Raul Mesnier du Ponsard, a student of Gustave Eiffel. Perhaps that's why the sophisticated iron structure, somehow reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower, was so striking. The riveted steel frame, intricate carvings, and vertical towers created a classic yet elegant atmosphere. The elevator, which stands 45 meters high, directly connects Lisbon's lower Baixa district with the upper Chiado area. It was a special experience, more than just a means of transportation; it felt like a small journey into the sky.
🌇 Observation Deck Above the Elevator
At the top of the elevator is the observation deck (Miradouro do Elevador de Santa Justa). Standing there, you can see Lisbon's red rooftops unfolding like waves, with the Castelo de São Jorge and the Rio Tejo River in the distance. As the afternoon sky deepened, the entire city was bathed in a golden glow, and I couldn't help but exclaim, "Is Lisbon really this beautiful?"
🚶 Street scene around the elevator
Rua de Santa Justa, below the elevator, is always bustling with activity. Cafes, souvenir shops, and street performers line the streets, and the iron elevator stands at its center, seemingly watching over the city.
At night, the soft lights create a dreamy atmosphere, as if past and present coexist.
