Kuang Si Falls
We'll introduce you to Tat Kuang Si Falls, located in northern Laos, approximately 30 km south of the World Heritage city of Luang Prabang. The address is Ban Long, Luang Prabang Province, Laos.
⸻
Directions & Transportation Costs 🚐
The waterfalls are approximately a 40-60 minute drive from central Luang Prabang.
• Shared tuk-tuk: Approximately 40,000-50,000 LAK (Lao kip) per person round-trip, or approximately 2-3 USD.
• Private tuk-tuk/charter: Approximately 180,000-200,000 LAK (10-15 USD) round-trip, depending on the fare.
• Alternatively, you can book a minivan with round-trip access through your hotel or tour company. For example, there are some options that include a round-trip minivan and entrance fee for about 5 USD.
*Please note that there are some mountain paths and bumps leading up to the waterfall entrance, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
⸻
Admission Fees & Tickets 🎫
• Admission fee for foreigners: Approximately 60,000 LAK (approximately 3 USD), including the park shuttle (electric cart to the entrance) and the Free the Bears "Tak Kuang Si Bear Rescue Center."
• Parking (scooter, etc.) may cost an additional 5,000 LAK.
• Tickets can be purchased at the on-site ticket booth on the day. No advance reservations are required.
⸻
The Appeal & How to Enjoy the Waterfall 💦
The waterfall has a multi-tiered structure, with beautiful turquoise-like blue-green pools, making it a popular photo spot. A short walk from the entrance leads to the first pool, and beyond that is the main waterfall (approximately 60 m high).
Also, near the entrance to the falls is the Thak Kuang Si Bear Rescue Center, where you can see protected Asiatic black bears (moon bears). It's included in the admission fee, so be sure to stop by.
There's a swimming pool, but there are slippery rocks and some sacred areas that are off-limits, so be sure to check the signs carefully.
⸻
Tips & Travel Tips ✨
• Visit right after opening at 8:00 AM for fewer people and better photography.
• The path to the falls is full of rocks and holes, and can be especially slippery during the rainy season, so wear comfortable shoes or sandals.
• Cash (LAK) is required at many points (entrance, parking, drinks), so be sure to bring some cash.
• There are snack and drink stalls around the falls. A café break after splashing around in the pool is also recommended.
• Dress code: Swimsuit and jacket (to protect against the cold) if you're planning on splashing around in the water. The waterfall's flow and humidity make it comfortable. #Luang Prabang Trip #Kuang Si Falls #Laos Trip #Overseas Travel Guide
