Lyon, France - Try it instead of Paris

Lyon, located in eastern France, is a city that beautifully blends rich history, culinary excellence, and a vibrant cultural scene. Known as the gastronomic capital of France, it offers an irresistible mix of traditional bouchons (local restaurants), elegant architecture, and a relaxed atmosphere along the Rhône and Saône rivers. The city's old town, Vieux Lyon, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its Renaissance buildings and secret passageways called “traboules.” From ancient Roman amphitheaters to modern art museums and bustling food markets, Lyon has something for every kind of traveler.

Reaching Lyon is easy. It has a major international airport (Lyon–Saint-Exupéry), located about 30 minutes from the city center by train or airport shuttle. Lyon is also a central hub for train travel in France, with high-speed TGV connections to Paris, Marseille, Geneva, and other European cities. Once in the city, the public transport system is efficient and includes metro lines, trams, and buses. A day pass costs around €6.50 and gives you unlimited rides.

Lyon is well known for its food, and trying local dishes like quenelles, sausages, and praline tarts is a must. Visit Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, a gourmet indoor market, to experience the best of local products. You can also stroll along the Presqu’île area for shopping or enjoy a river cruise for a scenic overview of the city.
If you have extra time, consider visiting the nearby Beaujolais wine region or taking a short trip to Annecy, known as the “Venice of the Alps.”
To make the most of your visit, walk up to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière for stunning views of the city. Lyon is a city best explored slowly, on foot and through its flavors, offering a perfect mix of elegance and authenticity.
