Machu Picchu: The Lost City That Finds You

Nothing prepares you for that first glimpse of Machu Picchu. As the early mist parts and the ancient citadel appears — cradled between steep green peaks and floating above the Urubamba River — you realize this isn’t just a destination, it’s a spiritual encounter.
I arrived via the Inca Trail, tired yet exhilarated, entering through the Sun Gate at dawn. But even those who reach it by train and bus from Aguas Calientes are met with the same gasp-inducing panorama. The stone city, untouched by time and war, feels like a secret whispered by the Earth — precise, powerful, and profoundly peaceful.
Walking through terraced slopes, ceremonial plazas, and astronomical observatories, I felt connected to something ancient and wise. Llamas grazed lazily as if guarding sacred memory, and silence clung to the stones, broken only by the wind.
What amazed me most was the engineering — dry stone walls fitted without mortar, aligned with solar events, yet standing strong after centuries. No one knows exactly how or why it was built, which only deepens its magic.
Best time to visit:
May to October for clear skies and crisp mountain air.
Getting there:
Train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, then a shuttle or hike up to the site. Inca Trail access must be booked months in advance.
Tip: Arrive early to beat the crowds, and hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for sweeping views and a deeper adventure.
