A Journey to the Heart of Spain ~ Madrid (Region)
Plaza Mayor, the main square of Madrid, is an iconic symbol of the city and a must-visit destination. Located in the city center, this grand square was first constructed in the 17th century under the reign of King Philip III, whose bronze equestrian statue stands proudly in the square. Officially opened in 1620, the rectangular plaza is flanked by columns and arches on both sides.
Over the years, Plaza Mayor has hosted a variety of public events, including bullfights, parades, festivals, theatrical performances, trials by the Spanish Inquisition, and even executions. The arcades surrounding the square are home to numerous traditional shops, bars, and restaurants. Among the most notable buildings in the square are the Casa de la Panadería (Bakery House) and the Casa de la Carnicería (Butcher's House), both adorned with beautiful murals.
