The largest domed church in Spain

Central Spain Tour ~ Madrid (Region)
This Neoclassical cathedral, located near the popular neighborhood of La Latina, stands out for its artistic richness, including paintings by Goya and Zurbarán, and its impressive dome, the largest in Spain and the fourth largest in Europe, after the Cathedral of San Pedro in Rome and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Belluno.
Declared a National Monument in 1980, it is traditionally said to stand on land given to Saint Francis of Assisi after he passed through Madrid on his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in 1214.
Before the current cathedral, three other Franciscan churches were built on the site, dating back to the 18th century. Construction was completed between 1776 and 1784 under the direction of Francisco Sabatini. The church consists of a circular central floor, covered by a large dome 33 meters in diameter and 58 meters high, a main chapel, and six surrounding chapels, also domed.
Inside, you can see a large number of paintings by 18th- and 19th-century Spanish artists such as Goya, Zurbarán, Castor Plasencia, Francisco Jove, Martínez Cubeles, José del Castillo, Moreno Carbonero, Eugenio Oliva, Menéndez Pidal, González Velázquez, Gregorio Ferro, Gaspar Crell, Vincent Carducci, Antonio Carnicero, Alonso Cano, and Lucas Jordaan, as well as outstanding sculptures made of white marble.
