Goya Etchings Exhibition: A Surprising Look Behind the Scenes of Art

Central Spain Trip ~ Madrid (Region)
During our visit to Madrid, we were fortunate to stumble upon a remarkable exhibition of Francisco Goya's prints at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. The exhibition showcases over 200 etchings from four of his legendary print series: Los Caprichos, The Disasters of War, Los Disparates (The Follies), and La Tauromaquia (The Bullfight). A truly rare treat, the original copper plates are displayed alongside the prints.
Each series reveals a different facet of Goya's genius. Los Caprichos blends fantasy with biting social satire, exposing human sin and follies with sharp wit. Los Disparates is a raw, unflinching chronicle of the horrors of conflict—no glorification, only truth. Los Disparates is perhaps his most enigmatic work: a dreamlike, nightmarish scene, rich with symbolism and mystery. Finally, La Tauromaquia captures the drama and intensity of bullfighting, a deeply ingrained part of Spanish tradition, with breathtaking energy and movement. This isn't just any museum website—this is an exhibition you'll only see once in a lifetime. In my opinion, Goya is one of the greatest painters in history, and with these prints, he proves that his genius wasn't limited to canvas. Through these meticulously crafted etchings, his haunting, ironic, and often brutally honest vision comes to life.
If you're in Madrid while the exhibition is still running, don't even think about skipping it. Goya doesn't just show you art; he shows you the world through his sharp, fearless eyes.
