Majestic San Francisco el Grande Basilica

The Royal Basilica of St. Francis the Great, known in Spanish as San Francisco el Grande, is a Roman Catholic church located in the heart of Madrid, in the La Latina neighborhood. The principal facade looks towards the Plaza of San Francisco. Its construction started in 1760 under King Carlos Ill, on the grounds of a Franciscan monastery supposedly founded by St. Francis in 1217. Among Madrid's five Royal Basilicas, it features Neoclassical architecture from the late 18th century. The Basilica has a circular layout and showcases the largest dome in Spain, measuring 108 feet wide—exceeding even that of St. Paul's Cathedral in London. Make sure to add this stunning landmark to the top of your must-see list.
