A must-see stop on any trip to New Zealand's North Island is Hobbiton. This charming village in Matamata served as a classic filming location for both "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" film series.
The scenery is ethereal, with lush green pastures, winding paths, and tranquil lakes, creating a breathtaking experience. Director Peter Jackson meticulously selected the land and meticulously crafted the set design, transforming Hobbiton into the warm and charming home of the Hobbits—the Shire.
We took a guided tour, the only way to visit Hobbiton. Our guide took us through iconic structures like the hobbit holes, the arched bridge, and the mill, allowing us to admire these lifelike details up close. Standing at the hobbit's door, we could almost imagine the leisurely life they led here, enjoying an idyllic pasture.
The guide's lively and engaging commentary, sharing many stories behind the filming, gave us a deeper understanding of this classic film.
Besides being a film set, the natural scenery surrounding Hobbiton is also breathtaking. The green hills and sky complement each other beautifully, creating an ideal photo backdrop.
