In Beigan, Matsu, one of the most lively spring celebrations is the Baiming Cultural Festival.
This traditional festival, dedicated to praying for blessings and thanking the gods, is a gathering of villagers. Temples blare with drums and music, and fireworks fill the night sky, showcasing Matsu's unique religious traditions.
Xuantian Shangdi plays a particularly important role. He guards the four directions, slaying demons and evil spirits with his sword and stepping on a tortoise and snake, symbolizing the protection of the border and the people. During the Baiming Festival, Xuantian Shangdi is often worshipped alongside deities such as Mazu and the Five Camp Generals, protecting the island from evil spirits and praying for good weather and the safety of the people.
As night falls, the deity's statues parade around the island, drums resound, and the sea breeze mingles with incense. This is more than just a religious ritual; it is a unifying force: faith connects the village, and the gods protect the land. Here, Xuantian Shangdi symbolizes both the god of war and the spiritual sustenance of those who protect the border islands. The Baiming Cultural Festival not only shows the excitement of the celebration, but also the protection contract between Xuantian God and the islanders that has been passed down from generation to generation.
