Travel Notes of the Dahan Stronghold in Beigan: Battlefield Time Under the Sea Cliff

In the southwest corner of Beigan Island, there is a majestic and silent military relic hidden - the Dahan Stronghold. This former coastal defense fortress has now become an echo of history, standing quietly under the sea cliff. When I took a car from Qinbi Village, the mountain road along the way was winding, and the blue sea in the distance and the mottled outline of the bunker came into view together, as if reminding travelers: this was once the first line of defense of the sea.

When you walk into the entrance of the stronghold, the first thing that comes into view is the thick granite wall and the slightly old slogans. The passage is narrow and deep, and the rock wall above your head is oozing with water droplets due to years of humidity. The air is salty and the coldness of the rock. These tunnels carved out of the hard mountain are winding like a maze, as if you can hear the footsteps and commands of the soldiers in the past. There are rows of shooting holes on the wall, and looking out through the narrow opening, there is an endless sea. The view is focused on a certain sea surface like a scope, which makes people unconsciously imagine the scene of soldiers on guard day and night.

Deep in the stronghold are ammunition depots, lounges and observation platforms. When I walked to the observation platform, a strong sea breeze blew in my face. There were steep sea cliffs under my feet, and the waves hit the reefs with thunderous sounds. Such a scene is shocking, and it can also better understand the loneliness and perseverance of the soldiers stationed here. Standing here, I think of the tense atmosphere of the Matsu battlefield government era. This stronghold is not only a military building, but also a witness to modern history.

When I left the Dahan stronghold, I looked back deliberately. The afterglow of the sunset dyed the entire stronghold golden, and the heavy walls looked particularly solemn in the interweaving of light and shadow. Now it no longer guards the flames of war, but guards the historical memory and the thoughts of travelers. The quiet beauty of the Dahan stronghold comes from the vicissitudes and the accumulated power of time.
