🎏 Dive into the “Floating World” at the Japan Ukiyo‑e Museum — Matsumoto, Japan

#hellohalloween

Nestled at 2206-1 Shimadachi, Matsumoto-shi, in Nagano Prefecture, the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum was founded in 1982 to showcase the vast collection of the Sakai merchant family. The museum holds over 100,000 ukiyo-e woodblock prints, paintings and screens, making it one of the largest private collections of this kind anywhere.

Inside, you’ll explore treasures from Edo-period masters such as Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige, take in a detailed video explaining how woodblock printing works, and browse the gift-shop filled with print reproductions and rarity finds. Visual and historical, the museum offers a deep dive into a key Japanese art tradition and its global influence.

For your visit: the museum is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last entry around 4:30 p.m.) and is closed on Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a public holiday). Admission is about ¥1,000 for adults with discounted rates for students. Getting there from JR Matsumoto Station involves a bus or taxi (about 25 minutes by bus) or walk from Oniwa Station on the Kamikōchi Line (~15 min).
