🎨 Dots & Mountains — Matsumoto City Museum of Art

#hellohalloween

Nestled in the heart of Matsumoto at 4-2-22 Chūō, Nagano Prefecture, the Matsumoto City Museum of Art opened in 2002 against the iconic backdrop of the Northern Alps. The building features a distinctive “M”-shaped roof—symbolic of “Museum” and “Mountains”—designed to reflect its unique setting.

Inside, the museum is best known for its vibrant collection of works by local-born artist Yayoi Kusama—whose pumpkins and polka-dot installations greet visitors even before entering. Beyond Kusama, the museum spotlights Japanese artists inspired by the region’s landscapes and culture through rotating exhibitions and thematic displays.

For your visit: The museum is open 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. (last entry 4:30 p.m.) and closed on Mondays (or the following weekday if the Monday is a holiday). Admission to the collection exhibition is about ¥700 for adults (¥800 at the counter) and ¥350 for university students; citizens over 70 and high-school students or younger may enter free with proof. Plan about 1–2 hours, with more time if you’re especially drawn to Kusama’s immersive works. The museum is a 12-minute walk from JR Matsumoto Station, making it easy to pair with a visit to nearby Matsumoto Castle.
