An ancient temple with a striking vermilion corridor standing on a small island in Matsushima Bay. It is said to have originated in 807 when the monk Jikaku Daishi Ennin enshrined the "Five Great Wisdom Kings." The current structure, rebuilt in 1604 by Date Masamune, is the oldest example of Momoyama architecture in the Tohoku region. From this temple, connected by a lattice bridge, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Matsushima that resemble a scene from a traditional Japanese painting.
