Today, I stood on the top of Shengshan Mountain and had a bird’s eye view of Songshan City. Mrs. Han asked me how I felt.
I replied with some emotion: Only when people are at high places can they see the most beautiful scenery. Only when walking alone on the road can you tolerate your own willfulness.
Looking towards the Seto Inland Sea, I will go to Imabari tomorrow and continue my path of Hōrō training.
Matsuyama Castle was built in 1602 AD by Kato Yoshiaki, who is famous for being one of the Seven Guns of Mount Katsuyama. The castle tower located on the top of Katsuyama Mountain with an altitude of 132 meters is one of the twelve complete castle towers in Japan. The 17-meter-high stone wall of the Honmaru, as well as the zigzag "screen folding" stone wall, give people a sense of artistry that transcends the purpose of defense.
In the late Meiji Restoration, Matsuyama Castle was transformed into a park. During the Showa era, fires and wars caused some damage to the buildings. It was not until Showa 41 (1966) that the first all-wood reconstruction in Japan began. Now there are 51 buildings of various sizes in the castle. The group, including 21 important cultural properties, has been restored to its former glory.
The Ninomaru Historic Garden once unearthed gold coins that belonged to a Russian prisoner who had a secret love affair with a Japanese nurse during the Russo-Japanese War. Because of this Japanese-style landscape, it has become a popular location for wedding photography, so it was selected as the "Holy Land for Lovers" ”. There are remains of a large well in the garden, which is 18 meters long, 13 meters wide, and 9 meters deep. It is estimated that it was built as fire water at that time. The ladder-shaped wood used as the foundation still retains its appearance today. According to the division of the houses left at the Ninomaru Residence at that time, they are divided into "Omotigotenji Citrus and Herb Garden" and "Okugodenji Flowing Water Garden". On the east side of the garden is the "Linquan Garden", which is arranged with the rock outcrop as the background. The pools and waterfalls express a Zen feel. There are also "Kanheng Pavilion", "Juraku Pavilion" and "Katsuyama Pavilion" in the garden that can be rented to hold cultural exchange activities such as tea ceremonies and haiku gatherings.
