The Makiyama Observatory, located on Irabu Island in Okinawa Prefecture, offers a stunning view of the magnificent Irabu Ohashi Bridge and the Miyako Blue Sea. It's a must-see for photographers and road trippers.
From the observatory, you can overlook the Irabu Ohashi Bridge (approximately 3,540 meters long, Japan's longest free sea-crossing bridge), which connects Miyako Island and Irabu Island. The bridge curves like a wave, extending into the endless azure sea. Combined with the unique "Miyako Blue" color of Miyako Island, the scenery is incredibly beautiful. On clear afternoons or evenings, the shimmering sunlight on the sea creates a stunning scene, perfect for capturing the intertwining beauty of the bridge and the sea.
The observatory is located within the highlands of Irabu Island's "Makiyama Forest Park." It features a parking lot, a walking path, and a rest area. While the hike up is a slight incline, the lush greenery and fresh air along the way make it a perfect place for a leisurely stroll and scenic enjoyment.
📍Address: Kuninaka, Irabu, Miyakojima City, Okinawa Prefecture
🚗Access: Approximately 30 minutes by car from downtown Miyakojima. Cross the Irabu Bridge to reach the Makiyama Observatory parking lot.
🕰️Opening Hours: Open year-round, all day (daytime recommended, as the park is not illuminated at night).
💰Admission: Free
💡Reminder: Sun protection and hydration are recommended in the summer. Please be careful during strong winds. Strollers are not recommended for uphill climbs.
