We stopped by Morioka Castle Site Park, also known as Iwate Park, during our drive from Sendai to Aomori, and it turned out to be a lovely little detour filled with quiet charm and history.
Although the castle itself no longer stands, the site is still rich in atmosphere. You can see the remnants of its former glory—most notably the impressive stone walls that hint at what once stood here. We parked at the lot just beneath the park, which made the visit easy and convenient.
As we were nearing winter, the cool air made for a refreshing and peaceful leisurely stroll through the grounds. The park was calm and not too crowded, which allowed us to take our time exploring the different paths and corners. We especially liked the small bridge in the center, which made for some lovely family photos.
From one end of the park, we even caught a glimpse of Mount Iwate in the distance—an unexpected but beautiful bonus.
If you’re passing through Morioka or just looking for a scenic historical stop, this park is well worth a short visit, especially if you enjoy quiet nature walks with a touch of history.
