Originally opened in 1732 as "Theatre Royal," the current building was rebuilt in 1858 after repeated fires and features a classical white facade designed by Edward Middleton Barry  .
The horseshoe balcony-style amphitheater has a huge stage depth of 12.2m and a height of 14.8m, and seats 2,256 people, and is world-class in both acoustics and stage beauty .
