A Journey Through History at Dejima Dutch Trading Post Site

Located in the heart of Nagasaki City, the "Dejima Dutch Trading Post Site" is a historical landmark known as Japan's sole gateway to the West during the Edo period. Built in 1636 as an artificial island to house Portuguese residents, Dejima became the center of economic and cultural exchange between Japan and Europe for approximately 218 years, from 1641 when the Dutch trading post relocated from Hirado, until 1859.

Today, Dejima has undergone restoration efforts to recreate its early 19th-century appearance. Within the site, visitors can explore reconstructed buildings such as the "Captain's Room," which served as the residence of the Dutch trading post's chief, as well as the homes of other staff members, warehouses, and more, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle and trade activities of the time.
