Nagoya: A Tranquil and Profound Journey Through Central Japan

Nagoya, while being a representative city of central Japan, offers a much more relaxed atmosphere compared to bustling Tokyo or Osaka. The seamless blend of modern urban life and traditional charm made the entire trip feel comfortable and enjoyable.

My first stop was Nagoya Castle. The majestic castle adorned with golden shachihoko exudes a sense of antiquity even amidst the cityscape. Inside, the exhibition hall provided an intriguing look into the Edo period and Nagoya's history. The well-maintained gardens surrounding the castle were perfect for a leisurely stroll and photography.

Next, I visited Osu Kannon Temple and the connected Osu Shopping Street. The temple had a serene and modest ambiance, while the shopping street was filled with traditional craft shops and street food stalls. The misokatsu and tenmusu I tried here left a lasting impression with their rich and deep flavors.

I couldn't miss Nagoya's signature dish, hitsumabushi (grilled eel rice bowl). The unique three-step way of enjoying it—first savoring the crispy eel as is, then adding green onions and wasabi, and finally pouring broth over it for an ochazuke-style experience—was truly special and satisfying.

To experience both culture and science, I visited the Nagoya City Science Museum. Its planetarium, one of the largest in the world, offered an immersive experience akin to traveling through space. The museum also featured numerous interactive exhibits that were enjoyable for both adults and children.

In the evening, I headed to the Sakae area to admire the night views of Nagoya TV Tower and Oasis 21. The vibrant and sophisticated atmosphere was a stark contrast to the daytime, with plenty of cafes and shops nearby for shopping and strolling.

Nagoya is a city that encapsulates tradition and modernity, gastronomy, and culture without being overly crowded. Even with a short itinerary, the trip was thoroughly satisfying, and it’s a place I’d love to visit again.
