Okinawa, Japan | Huanhui Gate: The Imperial Castle's Main Gate, Welcoming Guests with Dignity and Courtesy
Among Shurijo Castle's many gates, Huanhui Gate is the most symbolic. Its name means "Welcome Gate," and since the Ryukyu Kingdom era, it has served as the main gate for welcoming envoys from China and foreign envoys.
Stone steps wind upwards to reveal a solid stone wall at the gate's base, with wooden pavilions covered in Ryukyu's distinctive red tiles. The powerful characters "Huanhui" (Huanhui) adorning the gate lintel exude a solemn atmosphere. Passing through this gate, one officially enters the heart of the kingdom.
At the time, Huanhui Gate was more than just a city gate; it served as a stage for diplomacy and protocol. Envoys entering through this gate symbolized Ryukyu's respect for the suzerainty system; it also served as a showcase for the kingdom's grandeur and cultural confidence.
