Step Back in Time: Tsumago to Magome on the Nakasendo Trail 🏞️⛩️🌧️

Immerse yourself in the Edo-period charm as you wander the legendary Nakasendo Trail between Tsumago and Magome. Even on a drizzly day, the misty forest and slick stone paths create a magical, nostalgic vibe that sunny weather can’t replicate.

Start your journey in Tsumago-juku where cobblestone streets and wooden houses set the scene. Grab a warming snack at one of the tea houses before the hike - a hot mochi or local pastry is perfect fuel!

The trail is well-marked and takes 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace, winding through bamboo forest, mountain streams, and quaint hamlets. Don’t miss the post towns’ beautifully preserved facades for insta-worthy shots. The moody rain and soft lighting make for especially atmospheric photos near stone lanterns and old bridges.

Magome welcomes you at the end, with its steep street lined by shops selling local crafts and snacks. Take breaks to enjoy panoramic valley views from the top and try the renowned Gohei Mochi.

🧭 Tips:
- Rain brings a unique peace but wear waterproof shoes and bring a raincoat rather than umbrella. Narrow paths and wind can make umbrellas tricky.
- If possible, do the hike on a weekday for fewer crowds, especially in peak seasons.
- Bring cash, as smaller shops in the towns may not accept cards.
