Right next to the ancient city walls of Nanjing lies Xuanwu Lake (玄武湖), the largest imperial lake garden in China. Once reserved for royalty, it’s now a free public park where locals and travelers alike come to relax.
✨ What to See & Do
• The lake is dotted with five islands (Huan Isle, Ying Isle, Ling Isle, Liang Isle, Cui Isle), all connected by arched bridges, each with its own gardens and pavilions.
• Take a stroll along the lakeside paths shaded by willows, or rent a paddle boat to float on the calm waters.
• The backdrop of Purple Mountain (紫金山) and the historic Nanjing City Wall makes every view postcard-worthy.
• Seasonal highlights include spring blossoms, lotus flowers in summer, and golden autumn foliage.
🚇 Getting There
• Metro: Take Line 1 or Line 3 to Xuanwumen Station (玄武门站). The park entrance is right outside.
💡 Tips
• Free entry, open from early morning till late evening.
• Best enjoyed at sunrise for peace, or in the evening when the lake lights shimmer.
• Combine with a walk on the Nanjing City Wall nearby for a perfect half-day outing.
Xuanwu Lake is where nature, history, and city life come together — a must-see if you’re in Nanjing.
