History of the Tefuye Ancient Trail

The Tefuye Ancient Trail is located in Alishan, Chiayi County, and its history dates back to the Qing Dynasty. Originally, it served as a vital path for the indigenous Tsou people to travel between the villages of Tefuye and Dabang, used for hunting, transportation, and cultural exchange. During the Qing rule, the trail was widened by the government to meet administrative and military needs. In the Japanese colonial period, the trail became an essential route for transporting cypress wood and conducting forestry operations as the Japanese government actively developed Alishan's forestry industry. Settlements and stations gradually formed along the trail, reflecting the prosperity of Alishan's forest economy.

With the decline of the forestry industry and changes in transportation methods, the trail fell into disuse. It was only in recent years that it was restored and reopened through collaboration between the government and local communities, transforming it into a hiking trail. Today, the Tefuye Ancient Trail not only preserves its original natural scenery but also carries the history of Tsou culture and Taiwan's forestry development, making it a valuable cultural asset that combines human heritage and ecological significance.

Trail Guide

Public Transportation: Take a bus from Chiayi Train Station to Alishan, then transfer to another vehicle to reach the Tefuye trailhead.

Driving: Follow the Alishan Highway (Taiwan Route 18) to Shizhuo, then turn onto County Road 129 and follow the signs to the trailhead.

Recommended Duration: The hike takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. It is advised to bring water and wear hiking shoes.
