Nara: Where Ancient Japan Walks Beside You

Just a short ride from Kyoto or Osaka, Nara offers one of the most charming and peaceful day trips in Japan. This ancient capital is home to some of the country’s oldest temples, and hundreds of friendly deer who roam freely around Nara Park.

The iconic Tōdai-ji Temple is a must-see, housing a giant bronze Buddha that’s one of the largest in the world. The atmosphere is serene, spiritual, and deeply moving. As you walk through the park, you will pass by stone lanterns, sacred shrines like Kasuga Taisha, and elegant gardens that reflect the calm spirit of the city.

And yes, the deer. They bow. They follow you. They might even demand a snack (you can buy special deer crackers, “shika senbei,” nearby). It is one of those surreal, only-in-Japan experiences that you will never forget.

Tips for Visitors:

Try to arrive early to enjoy the peaceful vibe before tour groups

Be gentle and respectful with the deer, some can be cheeky!

Visit in cherry blossom or autumn season for extra beauty

Combine it with a trip to Kyoto or Osaka, it is super close

Wear comfy shoes, Nara Park is big
