Stroll around Naramachi, a town rich in the characteristics of the Edo period

Naramachi is an old commercial town with a long history in Nara. There are many townhouses in Naramachi, which are rich in Edo period characteristics. Most of them have been transformed into museums, fashionable craft shops, unique coffee shops☕️ and Japanese desserts🍧 shops.

In Naramachi, you can also find the world cultural heritage Gango-ji Temple, which is one of the seven major temples in Nara. It retains the architectural features of the Nara period (8th century). The roof of the main hall, Gokuraku-do, is paved with tiles and has a history of more than 1,300 years.

Naramachi is not very large, you can wander around without following a map, and there will be many surprises. When I went there, I went to the Naramachi Story Museum, which happened to have a mini handmade exhibition, and bought a pendant made by a local old lady👵🏻. I also went to the Naramachi Toy Museum to play with ancient toys🪀. I also went to Nigiwai House to learn about the traditional home life in the past.

If you have a day to stay in Nara, you can play with the deer in the morning and go to Todaiji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. For lunch, try Nara's specialty Kamameshi. After lunch, you can stroll around Naramachi.
