This fort, the oldest in Delhi, was built in the 16th century by the second Indian Emperor, Humâyûn, and also by Sher Shâh Sûrî who occupied the place from 1540 to 1555. The Hindus, always anxious to prove the "scientific" character of Vedic legends, strive to find remains of an earlier city, but the excavations have yielded only negligible results. The architectural wonders of Purana Qila, including the fort's extraordinary mosque, reveal the striking superiority of Indo-Islamic art over previous buildings.
Delhi was until 1947 a city of Islamic civilization populated by a majority of Muslims. But during the dramatic partition of India at independence, the proportion of religions was brutally reversed by the invasion of Hindus from Pakistan. Hindu terror following this invasion forced many Muslim Indian citizens to seek refuge in Purana Qila before migrating to Pakistan.
Even today, all the most remarkable monuments in Delhi, many of which are in the UNESCO inventory, are Indo-Islamic.
