In the past, Houtong was a small town that was a coal mine. Then, it expanded because of the migration of workers to work in the coal mine, which led to economic growth. Until 1990, the coal industry became less important, causing some of the townspeople to move to other places to find work. The current Houtong town has been renovated into the Houtong Coal Mine Ecological Park. There is a mining museum. Old buildings are preserved to show the coal industry in the past.
